John Hancock UPS Upgrade

Installation of a new 1,000 KVA Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system and new switchgear distribution system at 200 Berkeley Street, John Hancock’s downtown location in Boston MA.

Our Role

  • New equipment included: two sets of UPS systems (500 KVA each), battery cabinets with three 1,600 AMP switchboards, load bank terminal cabinet, 1,600 amp UPS unit and all associated conduit feeders
  • Executed numerous cutovers over several weekends to ensure smooth transition from the old system to the new
  • Tested all systems and load-banked the new UPS from a mobile load-bank machine cabled from the sidewalk up to the third floor. Performed an infrared scan after completion
  • Demolition of existing space, rigging in of all new equipment, coordinated start up of all new systems and all cutovers with John Hancock’s personnel

Execution

  • Foreman executed layout, assisted in design, and wrote up all cutover procedures
  • Supervised demolition of the space, coordinated all routing of feeders and placement of all equipment
  • Once completed, a new one-line diagram was created of existing data center, which will allow the client to better understand the overall electrical system

Interesting Facts

  • No GC – SullyMac was in charge of all coordination and was in direct contact with John Hancock
  • All testing was done in-house by the SullyMac testing group
  • The new UPS system will free up approximately 2,000 square feet of space
  • All work took place in the occupied building, with no issues or complaints from the customer or clients working within the facility
